Tax charges against star chef: is Alfons Schuhbeck now threatened with jail? | Regional

From: F. VON MUTIUS, S. KÜRTHY

Alfons Schuhbeck (72) is likely to have sleepless nights. A sword of Damocles hangs over the star chef from Platzl: Does he have to go to jail?

The Munich public prosecutor has brought charges against Schuhbeck. He is said to have evaded taxes of around two million euros. What will happen next with the “König vom Platzl”, who had just saved his businesses from bankruptcy?

The Munich district court is examining whether it will open a case against Schuhbeck. What is to be assumed, as it is very rare that an application from the public prosecutor’s office in tax matters will not be pursued by the court.

Can Schuhbeck, like 2002 ex-tennis ace Boris Becker (evaded 1.7 million euros, received 2 years probation and 500,000 euros fine), escape a prison sentence?

“Probation only in exceptional cases”

“It will be a difficult number for Schuhbeck. The Federal Court of Justice ruled in 2012: Anyone who evades taxes in the amount of more than one million euros usually has to go to jail. Probation is only possible in exceptional cases, ”says the renowned Munich lawyer Tom Heindl (45) to BILD.

A confession or the old age of the accused could mitigate the penalty. Schuhbeck could not be reached for a personal statement.
