Subscription for 49 euros turns local transport industry upside down

Berlin Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and the 16 prime ministers quickly agreed: next year there will again be a nationwide valid ticket for local and regional transport. Not again for nine euros as in the summer months, but for initially 49 euros as a subscription that is extended month by month. For two years, the federal and state governments want to subsidize the new discount campaign with three billion euros each.

But what comes as good news for consumers shakes the transport associations. The 49-euro ticket has serious side effects, it should fundamentally change the organization of local transport in Germany.

“As soon as possible,” says the decision of the federal-state group, the ticket should be available. There is no longer any talk of January 1, which Transport and Digital Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) had called for. An introduction on March 1 is realistic, said the Association of German Transport Companies on Thursday.
