The origin story of Spider-Man, the beloved superhero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is taking a completely different turn with the new animated series ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’, scheduled to air in 2024. So, is this change a good idea and what are the details of the new story?
Spider-Man origin story will be based on magic
In the animated series, which was announced as ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’ but later renamed ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’, it was revealed that Peter Parker got his powers from magic, not a radioactive spider.
In clips shown at the D23 Expo, Doctor Strange and the monster he fought fall through a portal on Peter’s first day at Midtown High, while a spider emerges from the portal and bites Peter, giving him his powers.
There are alternative versions of Spider-Man and different origin stories in comics. For example, in the alternate universe called Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man was not bitten by a radioactive spider. Spider-Man was bitten by a swarm of spiders that emerged after a historical artifact was broken, and he received his powers from a spider god.
But Spider-Man’s origin has never been changed so radically in the animated and live-action franchises. While the ‘Spider-Verse’ films have touched on alternate origin stories, this is the first time such a change has been made to the main story.
Ultimately, changing Spider-Man’s origin is a logical step, especially for a story set in an alternate timeline. It would add a new dimension to the character while also potentially surprising fans. It’s not expected to affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point.
