Berlin Artificial intelligence will revolutionize the world of work, probably even more than the internet. Experts warn that AI programs could soon take over the jobs of interpreters, accountants, programmers, maybe even lawyers and editors. This calls politics into action. The traffic light coalition is calling for taxing the use of the technology. “Basically, you can think about it,” said the co-head of the SPD-Left, Sebastian Roloff, the Handelsblatt.

“The idea of the AI tax is similar to the concept of the machine tax, which has already been brought into play when technical progress eliminates jobs and thus government income.” This would result in a lack of money for public investments and social security – for example for the statutory pension and health insurance.

The Green Group Vice President Andreas Audretsch made a similar statement. “Appropriate taxation of large digital corporations is a prerequisite for future prosperity for everyone,” Audretsch told the Handelsblatt. An AI tax would be one way to tax capital.
