Berlin In view of a billion dollar deficit in statutory health and long-term care insurance, calls in the traffic light coalition to burden higher earners more are getting louder. It makes sense to discuss a “significant increase in the contribution assessment limit” in statutory health insurance (GKV), said SPD parliamentary group leader Dagmar Schmidt to the Handelsblatt.

The limit up to which health insurance patients have to pay contributions is currently 4987.50 euros gross wage per month. It’s no secret that the SPD supports the increase to the level of the pension insurance, said Schmidt. This is currently 7100 euros in the new federal states and 7300 euros in the old ones.

The Greens parliamentary group deputy Maria Klein-Schmeink made a similar statement. “This would mean significant additional income for statutory health insurance and – unlike higher contribution rates – only burden high earners,” she told the Handelsblatt.
