South African medics observe milder cases

Cape Town The new Coronavirus variant Omikron is currently causing uncertainty and fear. Especially since initial laboratory data – for example the vaccine manufacturer Biontech and Pfizer – suggest that two vaccinations do not adequately protect against infection, a third dose is therefore necessary.

Doctors from Gauteng, the hardest-hit province in South Africa, report that they are currently observing significantly less severe disease courses than in previous virus waves. At the same time, however, they emphasize that the exact course cannot yet be determined because the mutation, which is considered to be significantly more contagious than the delta variant, has only been observed for six weeks.

On Wednesday, South Africa recorded 20,000 new infections – and thus more new cases within 24 hours than ever since the appearance of Omikron. Despite the rapid increase in the number of infections, the clinics in Gauteng have so far not been overloaded.
