A social partnership like in mining is not practiced everywhere.

Unterbreizbach, Kassel, Schmalkalden There is a hearty “Glückauf” as a welcome, then the hoisting cage rushes down the dark shaft, 784 meters. Further on in the truck through wide tunnels with white glittering walls, the deeper you go underground, the warmer it gets. At the end, Yasmin Fahimi will have arrived almost 1000 meters underground for a very special site visit.

The 54-year-old, who has headed the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) since May, is continuing the summer tour tradition of her predecessor Reiner Hoffmann. The visit to the Unterbreizbach potash mine of the fertilizer company K+S is a home game for Fahimi. She herself made a career for the trade union IG BCE (mining, chemicals, energy), which is in charge here. The level of organization in mining is high, and on the day after Fahimi’s visit, some of the new trainees are to be ceremonially accepted into the union.
