The demand by the SPD and the Greens for a speed limit of 130 kilometers per hour on German autobahns is causing a stir. Some see freedom in danger. The others refer to the number of serious accidents and rightly get upset about the lead-footed drivers with flashing lights. In an ADAC survey, half of the citizens are in favor of a speed limit.

So when the FDP and the Greens meet for exploratory talks, smart solutions are needed. The Liberals are against the speed limit and have scored points with the first-time voters. The Greens want to step on the brakes for reasons of climate protection – even if hardly any CO2 is saved. But that doesn’t matter.

A good compromise could be achieved with flexible solutions. On routes with an above-average number of or serious accidents, you have to act and look for specific solutions on site. Traffic experts are in favor of using variable message signs to indicate different levels of traffic and changing weather conditions and thus regulate the speed. At three o’clock at night, for example, a speed limit makes less sense than at rush hour.

The future of driving is electric and autonomous anyway. Green co-boss Robert Habeck thinks that a speed limit is also needed because electric cars can go from zero to one hundred so quickly. But the faster the cars of the current generation drive, the more they lose range. Every driver thinks carefully about whether to step on the accelerator.

The same applies to autonomous driving. That doesn’t go together with the razors and lane changers. Those who drive autonomously will have to keep their distance. And risky overtaking maneuvers are also not possible. Those who like to emulate Schumi or Vettel in their free time can do so as a hobby at the Nürburgring.

The focus must be on new forms of mobility

The fast-acting CSU boss Markus Söder did not categorically reject a speed limit some time ago. Because overall it is less about a rigid speed limit and more about the mega topic of mobility in the 21st century. This is where climate protection, digitization and security come together.

Bringing these issues in line with one another is one of the main tasks of the new federal government. The engineers and programmers are more advanced here than the politicians. You are already developing autonomous trains and aircraft without pilots. That’s the future.
