Frankfurt The Chinese economic metropolis Shanghai wants to achieve zero Covid status at municipal level in the next few days. Then, gradually, traffic restrictions could be eased and shops opened, said Deputy Mayor Wu Qing on Friday.

You’re getting closer and closer to the light at the end of the tunnel. Schools are to reopen gradually, beginning with classes about to take college or high school entrance exams. Although the situation is improving, joint efforts by all citizens in the fight against Corona are still required. The entire city with its around 25 million inhabitants should resume normal production and life “as soon as possible”.

When Chinese officials speak of “community-level” cases, they mean cases outside of the strict quarantine zones. Cases outside of these zones are being monitored particularly closely to see if the wave of infections is spreading further.

Shanghai has prepared for the end of weeks of strict lockdowns with a testing system that will allow residents to get tested quickly before going to public places. According to Wu, more than 5,700 test stations are in operation, and the target is 9,900. They should be able to test people within 15 minutes.
