Madrid, Berlin, Stockholm, Rome The Germans want to work less. At least that’s what they say in surveys. According to a survey by Yougov and the insurance company HDI, 76 percent would welcome a four-day week in their company. But there are no serious political initiatives in Germany.
Elsewhere, however, the idea is gaining supporters: Pilot projects will start this year in Spain and Portugal, and in Finland the governing Socialists have promised a large-scale pilot during the election campaign if they are re-elected. And in Italy, the country’s largest bank offers all employees the choice of a four or five-day week.
