Stuttgart It is probably the most renowned Balkan export of the 20th century. Emir Kusturica twice won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Today the director and musician prefers to appear on the Russian propaganda channel Sputnik rather than in Cannes or Venice. He is director of the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army in Moscow. But that’s just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

The Russian state broadcaster Russia Today opened its Balkans office in Belgrade in autumn 2022. Russian media propaganda in the Western Balkans was already evident: “Ukraine has attacked Russia,” wrote the largest Serbian tabloid “Informer” on the front page on the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February last year.
