G7 insist on complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine

G7 leaders insist on a “complete and unconditional withdrawal” of Russia from Ukraine. In a summit statement on the meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, published on Friday, the heads of state and government of the seven leading Western industrialized countries emphasized that they will continue to support Ukraine financially in the coming year. “A just peace is not possible without the complete and unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops and military equipment. This must be included in every call for peace.” In doing so, the G7 also make a preliminary determination for the various peace initiatives that are currently being put forward by Brazil, the Arab League and China.

So far, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has only said that a withdrawal of Russian troops is a prerequisite for peace talks, without mentioning the word “complete”. Western governments have repeatedly stressed that they want Ukraine to decide when to enter peace talks with Russia.

As expected, further sanctions against Russia were also announced. “We will expand our measures to ensure that exports of all goods critical to Russia’s aggression, including those used by Russia on the battlefield, are restricted in all areas of our jurisdiction,” it said. This also applies to the export of industrial machinery, tools and other technology that Russia needs to rebuild its war machine. Industry, construction and transport as well as services are mentioned. Possible effects on third countries should be avoided. However, the G7 itself cannot impose sanctions, only coordinate them.
