Vienna These are the biggest changes in the Ukrainian power apparatus since the beginning of the Russian invasion: Volodymyr Zelenskiy has fired two key figures in the Ukrainian security and law enforcement agencies, the head of the secret service and the attorney general.

As the Ukrainian President said on Sunday evening, Ivan Bakanov and Irina Venediktova will be held accountable for the behavior of their subordinates since the beginning of the war. Zelensky made the dismissals based on his extraordinary legal powers under martial law.

So far, 651 cases have been opened for high treason and collaboration, said Selenski. 60 members of the Attorney General’s Office and the secret service also worked with the new rulers in the Russian-occupied territories. “Such an accumulation of crimes against the foundations of state security raises serious questions,” emphasized the 44-year-old.

When it comes to personal details, Kyiv itself does not speak of layoffs, but of suspensions. Whether there were layoffs or not, Venediktova’s dismissal came as a surprise, Bakanov’s was a foregone conclusion.
