Dusseldorf Despite global tensions, Volkswagen subsidiary Traton is expanding its business in China. A new truck plant is currently being built in Rugao near Shanghai, which is scheduled to start production in 2025, as Traton boss Christian Levin confirmed in an interview with the Handelsblatt. From there, the Traton brand Scania wants to manufacture its trucks for the Asian market, among other things to minimize transport costs and routes.
Scania would be the first western truck manufacturer to have its own production facility in China. The factory should be able to produce up to 50,000 vehicles a year. “We need China to improve our position in the world market,” Levin said. It won’t work without the People’s Republic, the country is the world’s largest market.
