Dusseldorf SAP is one of the first German companies to introduce a so-called mobility budget across the board as an alternative to company cars. As of April 1, all eligible SAP employees have the option to choose, with a monthly budget, whether they want to travel privately by train, scooter, rental car, taxi, or tram. Bicycle repairs, for example, are also paid for.

The introduction has a signal effect. With a total of 17,000 vehicles, the software group has by far the largest fleet of company cars in German companies. The offer is well received internally. “The interest is huge,” says fleet manager Stefan Krautwasser.

The step shows that the company car is losing its appeal. For young employees, having their own car is no longer so popular as a status symbol. With the mobility budget, SAP wants to become more attractive as an employer.

The main focus is on employees who do not have or do not want to have a company car. “The idea is also well received by young talents and applicants, and that alone should justify any additional costs,” says Krautwasser.
