The central banks set the pace

The mood was better recently, says Handelsblatt editor Astrid Dörner – until the important central bank meetings this week.

Do you remember Spacs? Or the Gamestop Rally? So-called meme stocks like AMC and Bed Bath and Beyond? It feels like an eternity as investors couldn’t get enough of the shell companies that pumped big bucks to take startups like electric car maker Lucid public. And when young traders turned Wall Street upside down with their risky bets on failing companies.

“The air has escaped from all bubbles,” attests the independent capital market consultant Ed Yardeni. The many rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) have brought normality back to the markets.
