Russia’s war against Ukraine – all developments

French President Emmanuel Macron has given the Russian attack on Ukraine a realignment of European defence required. At the informal EU summit in Versailles on Thursday and Friday next week, there should be talk about strengthening defense, Macron said in a speech on the Ukraine war on Wednesday evening. Europe can no longer be dependent on others for its defense and energy supply, but must invest more in its own independence. France will also continue to strengthen its defense.

“Neither France, nor Europe, nor Ukraine, nor the Atlantic Alliance wanted this war,” Macron said. “Russia is not being attacked, it is the aggressor.” Nevertheless, he wants to continue talking to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. “We are not at war with Russia,” Macron said. “I have chosen to stay in touch with President Putin and will continue to do so as best I can and as much as is necessary to try relentlessly to persuade him to renounce gun violence.”

Hundreds of thousands of refugees from Ukraine are on the move and France will do its part to accommodate themsaid Macron. Meanwhile, he swore the French economy and population on burdens. “Our agriculture, our industry, many of our economic sectors are suffering and will suffer,” he said. “Our growth will inevitably be hampered. The rise in the price of oil, gas and raw materials has and will affect our purchasing power.”
