Russia’s war against Ukraine – all developments

The SPD in the Bundestag continues to rely on diplomatic initiatives to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. “Because we know that wars are usually not ended on the battlefield,” says the draft for a position paper by the largest government faction, which is to be decided at the annual meeting beginning on Thursday.

“Even if, for understandable reasons, there is no longer any trust in the current Russian leadership, diplomatic talks must remain possible.” That is why the talks between Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Russian President Vladimir Putin are right and necessary.

Wherever possible, diplomatic initiatives should be taken, according to the draft that is available to the German Press Agency and about which several other media have reported. “We must continue to make every attempt to persuade Russia to withdraw and to demand an honest willingness towards a just peace agreement with Russia.”

The Ukrainian government is skeptical about diplomatic initiatives. She sees no point in negotiations with Russia until all troops are withdrawn from Ukrainian territory.

DThe SPD parliamentary group wants to decide on the position paper on Friday. Then Scholz will also take stock at the exam after almost a year of war. At the beginning of their deliberations, the Social Democratic MEPs will deal with position papers on a European industrial strategy and on accelerating planning and approval procedures. Next to foreign policy, Friday is also about family and youth policy.
