Berlin, Zurich Dirk Harbecke, CEO of Rock Tech Lithium, wants to take Europe a step further on the way to the complete battery value chain. With his company, he is tackling the construction of a lithium converter in Guben, Brandenburg. Groundbreaking in the town near the Polish border is on Monday.
In lithium converters, the raw material lithium is processed and refined in such a way that it can be used for battery production. “We will initially use lithium from mines in Guben, preferably from Canada and Australia,” explains Harbecke in an interview with the Handelsblatt. “But our goal is to develop a closed lithium cycle. By 2030, 50 percent of the lithium used in Guben should come from recycled batteries,” says Harbecke. “We are thus taking a big step forward on the way to a circular economy.”
