RKI sees the peak of the corona wave “probably reached” – the incidence is increasing among older people

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) currently sees no way of declaring Berlin a so-called hotspot in the ongoing corona pandemic. A corresponding decision by the House of Representatives would be the prerequisite for protective measures such as the obligation to wear masks or access rules, which will largely no longer apply from Friday under the Federal Infection Protection Act.

“If Parliament were to decide in favor of a hotspot, it is highly questionable to what extent such a decision would be criticized,” Giffey said on Thursday. “The people of Hamburg are going this way. Now you have to see if that works.” The Berlin Senate will take a close look at it.

The assessment for the capital is that the conditions specified in the Federal Infection Protection Act are not met there. Despite an incidence in the 1000s, Berlin does not have any severe illnesses in corona patients. “And we don’t have our hospitals overloaded.” Due to the legal requirements, Berlin cannot use the hotspot regulation, said Giffey. “We simply have a legal framework that does not allow us to go beyond what we have now.”
