“Risk to collective security”: EU urges Huawei to be kicked out

Brussels, Berlin It was a meeting at the highest level, both politically and spatially: EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton had invited the heads of the European mobile phone companies to Brussels, and Telekom CEO Tim Höttges was also there. On the 13th floor, the top floor of the Commission and by European standards, very high up, the group sat together, Breton at the head of the conference table, three EU flags behind him.

When the usual pleasantries had been exchanged, Breton got down to business. The commissioner warned that the implementation of the safety precautions for the new high-speed 5G mobile communications was taking too long, as insiders reported to the Handelsblatt. The Commission is aware that some companies continue to rely on untrustworthy suppliers – contrary to EU goals. That has to change.

Breton did not single out any company. But Höttges in particular should have felt addressed: Deutsche Telekom is very closely linked to the Chinese technology group Huawei.
