Republican McCarthy wins the speaker election on the 15th attempt – but his triumph came at a high price

Washington After days of deadlock in the US Congress, a decision was finally made. “We’re ending this once and for all,” Republican Kevin McCarthy said late Friday night. And in fact, on Saturday night he was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives – the third highest office in the United States.

Since Tuesday, the Chamber of Congress had been fighting for a new chairman. In purely mathematical terms, the US Republicans could easily have filled the powerful post. Because the party had won the majority in the House of Representatives in the midterm elections in November, while the US Democrats were able to hold the Senate.

But vote after vote, 20 members of the ultra-conservative, Trump-affiliated “Freedom Caucus” McCarthy refused their approval. The resistance only began to crumble on Friday: McCarthy only attracted 15 dissenters to his side.
