Dusseldorf Casey Bailey speaks of a record: “I woke up with 138 new Slack messages,” says the 42-year-old. Normally it’s around 80. That’s how many direct messages are part of the day-to-day work of a manager who doesn’t share an office with anyone – and sometimes there are even more.

The head of human resources at the tech company Deel works in the US state of Utah, her team members are based in New York, Tel Aviv, London or on the Fiji Islands. The company has a decentralized structure, bringing together employees in around 90 countries. And it helps with decentralization: Deel provides payroll and compliance software so companies can hire new employees worldwide.

Since Bailey joined Deel in late 2021, the workforce has grown from around 550 to around 1,400. Her HR team initially consisted of five people, now there are 52. Her experience in personnel management in remote operations is correspondingly large. Your seven most important insights:
