Paris, Rome Mario Draghi celebrated his 74th birthday with midnight congratulations from his political friend from the neighboring country: At the beginning of September, Italy’s Prime Minister celebrated the new year of his life together with French President Emmanuel Macron. A photographer captured the scenes in the luxury restaurant “Petit Nice” in Marseille in the south of France: Macron and Draghi, smiling, behind them the Mediterranean Sea in the dark.

The picture is symbolic: two strong heads of government in southern Europe – with great ambitions also beyond the borders. In addition, after almost 16 years as Chancellor Angela Merkel is leaving a vacuum in Europe that her designated successor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has yet to fill.
