Record number of new infections – RKI boss expects a noticeable increase in cases after the autumn vacation

In Latvia recorded a peak in new coronoa infections on Saturday since the outbreak of the pandemic. The health authority in Riga reported 2799 positive tests within 24 hours. The situation in the Baltic EU country is thus worsening: In the last 14 days, according to official information 1195.4 new infections registered per 100,000 inhabitants – this is also a new high.

In Latvia, the corona numbers have risen significantly in the past few weeks. President Egils Levits also recently tested positive for the corona virus despite the vaccination. In view of the renewed spread of the virus, the government in Riga has one three-month health emergency imposed until January 11th. Associated with this are restrictions for both vaccinated and non-vaccinated people.

In Latvia, just under half of the 1.9 million inhabitants are fully vaccinated against Corona. The government has been trying for months with only moderate success to increase the population’s low willingness to vaccinate. In the public service and for certain professional groups, a corona vaccination has been established. This has recently caused the vaccination rate to rise: the number of people vaccinated at least once exceeded the one million mark on Saturday.
