Berlin The freight transport subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, DB Cargo, is bundling transport to and from China in a new company. The company announced on Friday that direct connections between China and 18 European countries should be possible with DB Cargo Transasia. Services in China could also be offered more quickly and from a single source. From now on, Chinese freight customers could be offered collection, transport via various rail networks and onward transport in Germany from a single source. Previously, customers would often have had to commission various service providers for this.

Last year, DB Cargo transported around 200,000 containers back and forth between Asia and Europe. By 2025, Deutsche Bahn intends to more than double its capacity to 500,000 containers. Traffic is currently being handled on ten routes.

China has been one of the EU’s most important trading partners for years, and even the most important for Germany. Most of the goods traffic between the two regions, however, is carried out by ship. Only 1.9 percent of the value of goods was transported by rail in 2017, according to the latest data from the Research Information System, a knowledge platform for the areas of mobility and traffic.
