Düsseldorf, Berlin In the middle of the preparations for his government formation, SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz is caught up with the Cum-Ex tax affair. On Tuesday officials approached his long-term confidante, Johannes Kahrs. In addition, the German Bundestag is to issue Kahrs’ emails. Because Kahrs no longer has a political mandate since May 5, 2020, a prior lifting of his immunity was not necessary.

Upon request, the Cologne public prosecutor confirmed to the Handelsblatt that it had “securing documents relevant to evidence and communication relevant to evidence”. She did not provide any details. A spokesman said: “With a view to the ongoing investigations as well as the allegation of tax evasion on which the entire matter is based, further information on the content of the proceedings cannot be given because of the tax secrecy to be observed.”
