davos In Davos, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a clear commitment to free trade: “To put it bluntly: Deglobalization is a dead end,” said the SPD politician on Thursday at the end of the World Economic Forum.

With this, Scholz addressed one of the most important debates of this year’s meeting in Davos: In view of the increasing tensions between the USA and China, economists, investors and CEOs discussed the future of the global economy and free trade at numerous events.

At the same time, Scholz called for the “reduction of strategic dependencies”, meaning, for example, dependence on energy imports from Russia. An economy that broadens is more resilient in a crisis-prone world, he said. Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck argued in a similar way in Davos on Monday.

And similar to Habeck, Scholz also said that “necessary diversification should not be used as a pretext for isolation, tariff barriers and protectionism”. The price of tariffs and trade barriers, Scholz said, is being paid by businesses, workers and consumers who are already suffering from rising prices.

The Federal Chancellor now sees the world before a new phase of globalization. In the next 30 years there will be less and less fixation on the markets in North America and Europe, and other parts of the world will also develop strong demand. The answer to this can only be more and not less international cooperation.

Don’t accept violations of human rights in China

At the same time, Scholz called on the international community not to accept the violation of human rights in China. The People’s Republic is once again a global player, said the Federal Chancellor, but no claim to hegemony in Asia and beyond can be derived from this. “Nor can we turn a blind eye when human rights are being violated, as we are seeing in Xinjiang.” The SPD politician was reacting to reports about the oppression of the Uyghurs in the Chinese province of Xinjiang.

Scholz also commented on the war in Ukraine: Russia’s attack was not just any conflict, it was “the claim of a nuclear, well-armed power to determine borders itself”.

Limits must be set for this imperialism: “Putin must not win the war, and I am convinced he will not win the war.” According to Scholz, Putin has already “missed all of his goals”. The Chancellor added: “I want to do everything to end this war as soon as possible.”
