CI Games’ marketing director, Ryan Hill, recently discussed the studio’s cautious stance on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) during an investor Q&A. He noted concerns that integrating social or political themes into games may negatively impact sales. While aiming to enhance player experiences and financial success, CI Games opts for a conservative approach, potentially alienating players who value diversity. Amidst these discussions, the studio is focused on updates for Lord of the Fallen and plans for its sequel.

CI Games’ Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

During a recent investor Q&A, Ryan Hill, the marketing director of CI Games—the creative team behind Lord of the Fallen—shared the studio’s perspective on the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the gaming sector. Hill expressed that the incorporation of social or political initiatives in certain recent games has been a factor in their commercial decline.

For CI Games, the primary aim is straightforward: to enhance player satisfaction and secure financial success while steering clear of what it perceives as “high-risk” strategies.

Business Decisions and Player Experience

Hill elaborated that the studio concentrates on delivering “exceptional user experiences” and “engaging narratives.” However, this approach prompts inquiries about CI Games’ interpretation of “social or political programs” and their potential detrimental effects on game performance. Notably, Hill did not specify any particular definitions or examples to substantiate his claims.

The ongoing discussion regarding DEI continues to polarize the industry. Some developers, such as CD Projekt—known for The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077—view diversity as essential for fostering creativity and innovation. In contrast, CI Games adopts a more conservative stance. This disparity highlights differing opinions on player desires and what constitutes a truly immersive gaming experience.

While CI Games aims to sidestep polarization to reach a broader audience, this strategy might inadvertently alienate players who appreciate diverse and contemporary representations. Every game, irrespective of its narrative, reflects certain values and choices made by its creators. Ironically, the decision to eschew social themes can be perceived as a political stance in itself.

Additionally, the lack of a comprehensive and nuanced perspective from CI Games opens the door for interpretation and even potential controversy. In an era where DEI discussions dominate various industries, neglecting this evolution could place the company at a disadvantage, especially on the global stage where consumer expectations differ. Conversely, the dark fantasy setting of Lord of the Fallen may lend itself to an environment devoid of such discussions, even though titles like Elden Ring and other Soulsborne games are rich in political undertones.

This announcement coincides with CI Games’ plans to prolong the life cycle of Lord of the Fallen. The game, which debuted in 2023, is set to receive substantial updates leading up to its 2.0 version, slated for release soon. A sequel is already in the works, with extensive testing planned for 2025. It remains uncertain whether these strategic choices will bolster player engagement or lead to the contrary.

CI Games’ position on DEI underscores the existing tensions in the gaming industry. While some studios champion diversity as a catalyst for creativity, others opt for a more detached approach to avoid fracturing their audience. The effectiveness of this strategy in enhancing CI Games’ commercial standing or potentially distancing itself from segments of its player base remains to be seen.
