Munich The BMW Group is planning to further expand its involvement in China. According to information from the Handelsblatt from corporate circles, CEO Oliver Zipse is preparing the production of the X5 and an electric version of the 3 series in China.

The heavy off-road vehicle X5 is one of the most important profit makers in the group. So far, the model has only been built in the US plant in Spartanburg and exported to China. The high demand in China and the growing tensions in trade policy between China and the USA are now causing management to rethink. The fully electric sedans of the 3-series should serve the growing share of electric cars in the Chinese market from 2022.

BMW did not want to comment on the information. The importance of China for BMW continues to grow: the country is already the largest single market for the group, and every third car is now sold here. The decisions are also related to the planned majority takeover of the production joint venture with the Chinese manufacturer Brilliance.
