Apple’s product, which was launched with MacBooks 16 years ago, is no longer produced as of today.
SuperDrive, Apple’s external CD/DVD drive launched in 2008, is completely withdrawn from the market after a 16-year adventure.
It was reported that SuperDrive was out of stock at Apple’s online store in the US a few months ago. Currently, the product appears to be out of stock or unavailable in all Apple stores around the world. Allegedly, Apple has decided to stop the production of SuperDrive after 16 years.
What did SuperDrive do?
SuperDrive was first introduced with the original MacBook Air model, which did not have an internal CD/DVD drive. The device was a practical solution that allowed users to play or burn their CDs and DVDs.
At that time, laptops without optical drives were becoming common in Apple’s product range, and SuperDrive filled this gap. Although having a USB-A connection makes it difficult to use with modern devices SuperDrive remained on the shelves as one of Apple’s most durable accessories for a long time..
However, today CD/DVD drives have become an increasingly niche product. With the rise of digital media, there has been a significant decline in physical disk usage. This is seen as the main reason why Apple stopped SuperDrive production.
