President Lagarde explains the renewed interest rate hike in the euro area

As expected, the ECB raised interest rates in the euro area. For the first time since the beginning of the rate hike cycle last summer, the central bank chose an interest rate step of 25 basis points. This was expected in advance.

The policy rate is now 3.75 percent. The deposit rate – this is what banks receive when they invest excess capital with the ECB – is now 3.25 percent.
