Tokyo, Washington In just a few hours, Chinese air and sea forces could bring Taiwan to the brink of surrender. “An inaugural bombardment will destroy most of Taiwan’s navy and air force,” according to a simulation by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a renowned Washington think tank.

“The Chinese navy, reinforced by a powerful array of missiles, is encircling Taiwan, thwarting any attempt to bring ships and planes to the besieged island. Tens of thousands of soldiers cross the straits in amphibious vehicles as airstrikes shake the ground.”

The oppressive scenes are excerpts from a so-called “war game”, a military simulation. On 156 pages, security experts describe an attack against the island that China claims as its own.
