Power struggle for Laschet and Co. paralyzes the party

“The party has to learn to walk”: With this reference, a general secretary of the CDU paved her way to the party leadership and to the Chancellery. It was Angela Merkel’s settlement with Helmut Kohl in the party donation affair in 1999.

Now the Union is facing the next break. The party has been trying to learn to walk without Merkel since 2018 and has so far fallen repeatedly: first its chairwoman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and now Armin Laschet. At least he’s still trying to set up assistants so that things don’t go on like in previous years after him. So who will come next and show the party the way?
