Frankfurt. The potency pill Viagra and its imitation products are still only available on prescription in Germany. That was decided on Tuesday afternoon by an expert committee at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Bfarm).

Specifically, it was discussed whether the Viagra active ingredient sildenafil in the 50 mg dosage would be removed from the prescription requirement in Germany. According to information on Bfarm’s website, the Expert Committee unanimously recommended that the relevant application be rejected. The manufacturer had probably submitted the application.

The drug, once developed by the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer, is now sold by the listed pharmaceutical company Viatris, which Pfizer formed in 2020 together with the drug company Mylan. Viatris Germany did not want to comment on the application to the Handelsblatt.

The blue Viagra tablet was the first oral product for erectile dysfunction and had gained worldwide fame shortly after its approval in 1998. In the years that followed, the potency pill was one of the most illegally copied and sold drugs in the world.
