Political tensions are once again putting Northern Ireland to the test

The time of the so-called “Troubles” is still omnipresent in the Northern Irish provincial capital.

London Northern Ireland had never heard of it: “Northern Ireland is in an incredibly special position – a unique position in the whole world, on the continent of Europe – as it has privileged access not only to the UK single market, which is huge (… .), but also to the European Union.”

With these words, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tried at the end of February to make his agreement with the EU palatable to the Northern Irish. Northern Ireland remains part of the European single market, but the EU largely refrains from customs controls on goods delivered to the province from the rest of Great Britain.

What the Northern Irish, on the other hand, have often heard: At the end of March, the British Minister for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, warned of an increased threat of terrorism in Northern Ireland and warned that an attack was very likely.
