Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed concern over Elon Musk’s recent wave of Twitter censorship, noting that the site’s wave of account bans over the past few days has put Twitter on the “path to authoritarianism.”
Vitalik Buterin Criticizes Elon Musk’s Twitter Policy
In response to a post praising Musk, Vitalik Buterin said that Musk has implemented a strategy he calls “central planning in the form of hyper-compliance,” and that Musk has come up with policies that “seem to be re-adapted around Elon’s views on very specific situations.”
Buterin also continued his thoughts on Musk’s decisions as follows:
“A good policy must first be decided behind the veil of ignorance and then implemented.”
The latest wave of censorship concerns began when Musk banned the @ElonJets account that followed Elon’s flight, as well as the @CelebJets account that followed the private jets of various celebrities. Such bot trackers take and repost publicly available information, which is legal in the US.
However, Musk saw this as a threat to his privacy and security and went a step further, banning the personal account of Jack Sweeney, the creator of the Elon Jets Twitter bot.
Musk soon implemented a new Twitter policy that bans “all tweets or accounts that share someone’s live location”, with the exceptions “related to a crisis situation or public events to aid humanitarian efforts.”
In his previous statement, Musk had said that he would not ban even an account that shared the location of his private jet in order to support freedom of expression, even if it put him in danger.
