Payback, Deutschlandcard and Co. bring customers hardly any savings

Dusseldorf Retailers promise customers lucrative deals with their bonus programs by collecting points. The supermarket chain Rewe, for example, speaks of “exclusive advantages” if you use the Payback card there. Edeka advertises “maximum points, maximum ease” for the Deutschlandcard in the app.

But the balance sheet of the actual benefits for customers of grocers is sobering. In many cases, the savings are not even one percent. This is the result of an evaluation of almost 500,000 real receipts, which the company Smhaggle carried out exclusively for the Handelsblatt. The start-up has developed its own app for price comparison when shopping.

“The effect on the customer is minimal,” observes Sven Reuter, Managing Director of Smhaggle. The savings effect of the Payback, Deutschlandcard, Lidl Plus and Kaufland Card programs was examined. And there were definitely differences.
