Olympia 2022: women’s monobob: Olympic champion Jamanka only 17th out of 20

Suddenly we start to lurch in the gold channel!

After six Olympic victories in a row for our tobogganists and skeletonists, the title in the women’s monobob is probably already gone. After the first two of four runs, Laura Nolte (24) is already 1.22 seconds behind the leading world champion Kaillie Humphries (36) from the USA in third place. Second is Canadian Christine de Bruin.

Two-man bobsleigh Olympic champion Mariama Jamanka (31) made several mistakes in both rounds and is only ranked 17th out of 20 bobsleds. The native Berliner, who is European champion in monobob, honestly: “Unfortunately, my runs were catastrophic, unfortunately the second one wasn’t better, annoying, I knew that I could do better in training.”

Her hope is anyway in the two, where she has the fastest woman in Germany with Alexandra Burghardt (27) as a brakewoman.

But Nolte still has a very good chance of winning a medal: “If the corner entry is just a millimeter off, the Mono breaks out extremely quickly. If I get that under control, I can attack again in front.”

The Dortmund native plays down the pressure from the German winning streak in the ice channel: “You’re just happy for the others, but you know that all eyes are on you now. Because we will probably be the first discipline where it is not like that.”

But it can still be a medal on Monday (2.30 a.m. and 4 a.m.) when the two decisive runs are on.
