Berlin In times of rising interest and material costs, the number of building permits for new apartments is falling. It fell in November by 16.3 percent compared to the same month last year to 24,304, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Wednesday.

From January to November, the responsible authorities gave the go-ahead for a total of 321,757 apartments. This was 5.7 percent less than in the same period of the previous year. The results include both building permits for dwellings in new buildings and for new dwellings in existing buildings.

The construction industry is still sitting on a thick backlog of orders. However, there have been more and more cancellations recently. The construction industry is therefore pessimistic about 2023 and expects a real decline in sales of around six percent for the current year.
