Nuclear phase-out: EU Commissioner Breton calls for postponement

Brussels EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton intervenes in the German nuclear debate. “It is extremely important to let the three German nuclear power plants that are still in operation run longer,” he told Handelsblatt. “At least for a few months and of course in a safe way.” The remaining reactors played an important role in the power supply. They should go off the grid by the end of the year as part of the nuclear phase-out in Germany.

Like the federal government, the EU Commission also fears that Russia could stop gas supplies to Germany this month. “Vladimir Putin is using our dependence as a weapon against us,” the French commissioner warned of the Russian president’s policies.
