Berlin The final settlement of the short-time work from the pandemic years causes personnel costs of more than 100 million euros annually at the Federal Employment Agency. “2,300 colleagues are currently only dealing with the final exams on short-time work, and that will continue until 2024,” said the finance director of the Nuremberg authority, Christiane Schönefeld, to the Handelsblatt.

The short-time allowance is a good tool that quickly helps with seasonal and economic fluctuations, but nothing for a widespread, substantial crisis. “For such situations, it would be good to have a time-defined, industry-related instrument that is much easier to use,” stressed Schönefeld.
