Affordable electric vehicles are becoming more prevalent, with models like the Renault 5 E-Tech and Fiat Grande Panda leading the charge. Nissan plans to launch the Pixo, an electric city car, in 2027, designed alongside a refreshed Renault Twingo. Both vehicles are expected to be priced under 20,000 euros and equipped with an 82-horsepower engine and an LFP battery, offering a range of 250 to 300 kilometers. Production will occur in Slovenia, allowing for ecological incentives.

Affordable Electric Vehicles on the Rise

The landscape of electric vehicles is evolving, with prices becoming increasingly accessible. This positive shift is largely attributed to the introduction of budget-friendly models like the innovative Renault 5 E-Tech, the Fiat Grande Panda, and the Citroën ë-C3. Additionally, more exciting options are set to hit the market soon.

Nissan’s Upcoming Electric City Car

While Volkswagen is known for its electric offerings under 25,000 euros, Renault is also gearing up to unveil a refreshed Twingo, showcased at the Paris Motor Show in October 2024. This new model is anticipated to be priced below 20,000 euros and will have a Japanese counterpart produced by Nissan. Originally, the collaboration was intended with Volkswagen, but plans shifted to work with the Japanese manufacturer instead.

Last October, it was hinted that the two companies would collaborate through the Ampere subsidiary, and now this partnership appears to be confirmed, as reported by sources from l’Argus. Insights from an anonymous tipster reveal that Nissan’s latest electric city car is scheduled for launch in 2027.

Expected to be called the Pixo, this new vehicle will showcase a unique design that sets it apart from the Twingo, which is slated for release a year earlier. This timeline allows the Japanese design team to infuse the car with a distinctive identity. Reports suggest that the front end and rear bumper will both undergo design updates.

Inside the vehicle, the driver’s seat will see some modifications, though they will be relatively subtle. The interior is expected to closely resemble that of the Twingo, which was introduced at the Brussels Motor Show in 2025. Features like a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen—possibly inspired by the Renault 5 E-Tech—will likely be included.

Performance and Pricing

Under the hood, the Pixo is expected to share the same 82-horsepower engine as the Twingo, paired with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery from leading Chinese manufacturer CATL, with an estimated capacity of around 30 kWh. This setup should enable the electric city car to achieve a range of approximately 250 to 300 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. While details about charging capabilities remain scarce, further information is anticipated soon.

The Nissan Pixo aims to maintain an attractive price point of under 20,000 euros, similar to its Renault counterpart. This move is crucial for Nissan, which is reportedly exploring a new partnership with Honda amidst challenges posed by declining electric vehicle sales. These difficulties have led to the announcement of 9,000 layoffs in November 2024 and a reduction in production rates.

Manufacturing of the new Nissan Pixo is set to take place in Slovenia, alongside the Twingo, allowing it to qualify for ecological incentives. Additionally, the next Smart #2 may also be assembled on the same production lines.

Positioned as the successor to the ForTwo, this new city car is expected to incorporate design elements from the upcoming Twingo while being based on a platform developed by the Geely group. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming months!
