Chinese electric vehicles, particularly BYD, are gaining traction in Europe, with BYD emerging as a significant competitor to Tesla. The premium brand Denza, a BYD subsidiary, plans to enter the European market soon. Nicolas Declunder, a Denza N7 owner, shares his positive experience with the vehicle, highlighting its luxury, advanced technology, and user-friendly software. He appreciates Denza’s customer service and is optimistic about future upgrades, while enjoying convenient charging options in China.
Exploring the Rise of Chinese Electric Vehicles in Europe
Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), particularly those from the mainland, remain largely unfamiliar to many European consumers. Nevertheless, China holds a commanding position in the global electric vehicle market, accounting for a staggering 64% of all electric cars sold worldwide.
This trend is not confined to China alone; Chinese manufacturers are expanding their footprint internationally. A notable contender is BYD, which has emerged as Tesla’s primary rival, securing its place as the second-largest electric car manufacturer globally. The competition between these two companies is fierce, with both achieving nearly identical sales figures in the electric vehicle sector.
BYD and Denza: Pioneers in the European Market
BYD is gradually becoming a recognizable name in France, having made its debut at the Paris Auto Show in late 2022. While sales figures are still relatively modest, it is possible for French consumers to purchase a BYD and enjoy the benefits of electric mobility.
In the coming months, the premium brand Denza, a subsidiary of BYD, is set to launch in Europe. During a recent visit to China, we had the opportunity to meet Nicolas Declunder, a Denza N7 owner, who shared his unique insights about his experience.
Nicolas, originally from the Paris region, has lived in China since 2005 and has a rich background in the audio electronics industry. After spending five years in Japan, he returned to China in 2023, where he has been actively observing the rapid evolution of connected electric vehicles. His passion for technology and sustainable mobility drives him to explore new opportunities in this burgeoning industry.
When asked about his Denza, Nicolas explained that he opted for an electric vehicle due to his driving patterns and the importance of having a user-friendly software ecosystem compatible with iOS. The Denza N7 stood out to him for its luxurious interior reminiscent of Mercedes quality, combined with BYD’s advanced battery technology.
Having owned the Denza N7 since February 2024, Nicolas has already accumulated 30,000 km on the odometer. Despite some initial suspension issues that required tire replacements, he praises the vehicle’s ongoing improvements through over-the-air updates and its autonomous driving capabilities, which are steadily advancing towards level 3 in Europe.
In terms of after-sales service, Nicolas appreciates Denza’s customer-centric approach, which includes complimentary snacks and meals during dealership visits. He is also excited about the potential upgrades available for his vehicle, enhancing its features over time.
If given the choice again, Nicolas would lean towards the Denza Z9GT or the Yangwang U7, showcasing his preference for sedans and GTs. His extensive experience with the Denza N7 has solidified his belief in the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation.
Charging his car in China is convenient, with a 7 kW charging point installed at home, and fast chargers readily available for longer journeys. The cost of electricity is also quite affordable, further promoting the use of electric vehicles in the region.
