New Bundestag meets for the first time

Of the new chairwoman of the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU, Hendrik Wüst, and his party assume that despite a narrow majority in the black-yellow coalition in the state parliament, he will be elected as the successor to Armin Laschet as prime minister. The confidence and security that Wüst will receive the necessary votes is 100 percent, said the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, Bodo Löttgen, on Monday in Kamp-Lintfort after deliberations of the group.

The CDU was “closed and strong,” stressed Wüst. The meeting is a “good launch pad for an important week”. The black-yellow coalition only has a majority of one vote in the Düsseldorf state parliament. Wüst wanted to consult with the coalition partner FDP that evening. His election as the successor to Laschet is planned for Wednesday, who, as announced, resigned his post as prime minister that morning.

As the new Prime Minister, Wüst wants to tackle the issues of solid finances, internal security and high energy prices. The expansion of renewable energies must take place in such a way that it is accepted by the population, said the 46-year-old.

Laschet had announced that he would switch to federal politics after the federal election and step down from the post of head of government in North Rhine-Westphalia. State Transport Minister Wüst had already been elected as the new party leader of the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday.
