Moscow A Moscow court has found jailed Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny guilty in another controversial trial. In the trial, which was criticized as a political staging, the judge found President Vladimir Putin’s best-known opponent guilty of fraud on a particularly large scale, among other things. This was reported by the Interfax agency on Tuesday from the negotiation.

According to judge Margarita Kotova, Navalny stole the assets of strangers “by deception and abuse of trust”. The sentence for the 45-year-old was initially unclear. Navalny’s lawyers are demanding an acquittal.

The public prosecutor’s office, on the other hand, had requested 13 years in a high-security prison. She explained that Navalny had committed crimes in detention and had thus become a repeat offender.

The father of two had to answer this time for alleged misappropriation of funds for his anti-corruption foundation, which is now banned in Russia, and for insulting a judge in an earlier trial.

Poisoned with a neurotoxin

In August 2020, Navalny collapsed on a flight within Russia. First he was treated in Russia, then transferred to the Berlin Charite. There, poisoning with a nerve agent was determined.

The government in Moscow has denied allegations that Russian authorities tried to kill President Putin’s critic. Navalny was arrested on his return home in January 2021 and convicted of violating the terms of his probation.
