NATO states agree: Ukraine should become a member

Zelensky arrived in Moldova for the European summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy traveled to neighboring Moldova for the European Political Community (EPG) summit. Arriving at the informal meeting of dozens of European leaders in Chisinau on Thursday, he reaffirmed Ukraine’s desire to join NATO. His country is waiting for the defense alliance to give the green light.

More than 40 European heads of state and government are expected at the summit scheduled for Friday. According to EU diplomats, a sign of solidarity with the impoverished country should be set. Fear of Russian interference has been growing among the approximately 2.5 million residents of Moldova since the start of the Ukraine war. Pro-Russian separatists in the Transnistrian region, a narrow strip on the border with Ukraine, are also contributing to this. The EPG is still a young format that is primarily intended to promote exchange between the 27 EU states and governments that are not in the EU. In addition to Ukraine and Moldova, these also include Turkey and Great Britain.
