Nationalized gas company wants to build German hydrogen network

Berlin When it transpired at the beginning of December last year that Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) wanted to build a hydrogen pipeline network with state participation, there was great excitement.

The operators of the long-distance gas pipelines in particular felt overwhelmed. After all, they have been promoting their plans to convert the network previously used for natural gas into a hydrogen network for three years – and without state involvement. It should be 5900 kilometers long and connect the future producers in northern Germany with the industrial centers in the west and south of the country.

Time has passed since Habeck’s advance, and the excitement has died down a bit. Officially, the Association of Gas Transmission System Operators (FNB Gas) states that the plans of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology caused “a great deal of uncertainty, especially among companies that are currently planning large hydrogen projects or are already concretely implementing them and have already made initial investments for them”.
