NASA images the interestingly shaped 2011 AG5 asteroid

A new asteroid discovered by astronomers at NASA is getting a lot of attention. US space agency 2011 AG5 announced that the asteroid, known as

2011 AG5 asteroid approached Earth

First discovered in 2011, the asteroid came very close to Earth on February 3, 2023 and passed 1.7 million km from our planet. Astronomers seized this opportunity and Goldstone Solar System Radar He studied the asteroid using

Observations showed the asteroid to be 487 meters long and 152 feet wide—roughly the size of the Empire State Building. It was also stated that it has a coal-black-looking pitted surface.

As it approached Earth on February 3, it provided important information for NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). Accordingly, 2011 AG5 orbits the Sun every 621 days and will not revisit Earth until 2040.

It was also a cause for concern when it was discovered in 2011 because of the possibility of colliding with the Earth. The last observation ruled out any possibility of collision. New measurements made by the CNEOS team will further clarify its position in the future.

While the asteroid poses no threat to Earth, its unusual shape and size provide valuable information for astronomers studying the history and composition of the solar system. By studying asteroids like 2011 AG5, scientists will be able to learn more about the formation and evolution of the Solar System.
