The Speaker of the House of Representatives wants to pave the way for a new generation.

Washington US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi will no longer lead her party in the House of Representatives. The 82-year-old Democrat announced this at the beginning of a parliamentary session on Thursday in Washington. “For me, it’s time for a new generation to lead the Democratic Group, which I respect so much,” she said.
The US Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. You must now appoint a new faction leader. Pelosi will remain MP.
Hakeem Jeffries is the favorite to succeed her. The 52-year-old would be the first African-American to lead a party in the House of Representatives. He has been leading the parliamentary group in the chamber since 2019.
Jeffries is a Liberal Congressman from New York. Observers describe him as reserved compared to Pelosi. It cannot be ruled out that other leading Democrats will also throw their hats in the ring for the Pelosi episode.

As chair of the House of Representatives, Pelosi was number three in the state ranking after US President Joe Biden and his vice president Kamala Harris. The Democrat from California is considered a key liberal figure in American politics. In 2007, she became the first woman in the country to hold the position of Chair of the Chamber for the first time.
In 2019 she became President of the House of Representatives and thus the central political opponent of Republican President Donald Trump. Pelosi was then elected to the post for another two-year term in November 2021.
Assault on her husband overshadowed the midterms
Pelosi has also attracted attention outside of the US. A visit by President Joe Biden’s allies to Taiwan in early August sparked clear irritation in China.
A brutal attack on her husband Paul Pelosis recently overshadowed the US election campaign. A few days before the so-called midterms, an attacker broke into the couple’s home in San Francisco. The attack was aimed at Pelosi herself, who was not at home at the time.
Pelosi’s departure could trigger a domino effect in the Democratic caucus leadership. Group leader Steny Hoyer and group leader James Clyburn have also announced that they will make a decision about their future. Both are also over 80.
